April 10, 2021, is National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day, a day to recognize the major impact HIV has on the youth and the need for more education and prevention. According to the CDC, in 2018 youth age 13-24 made up about 21% of all the new HIV diagnoses in the US. It is important that adolescents become aware of the risk of HIV and take the steps to protect themselves such as wearing a condom during sex. Additional factors that increase the risks for adolescents getting HIV include having STDs, having older sexual partners, using alcohol or drugs, and exchanging sex for money, drugs, or shelter.
