The Fulton-Dekalb Authority Mourns the Loss of Longtime Chairman, Thomas W. Dortch, Jr.

Atlanta, GA — Feb. 17, 2022 – It is with extremely heavy hearts and great sadness that the staff and Board of Trustees of The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority extend our deepest condolences to the family of Thomas W. Dortch, Jr.

Dortch served as Board Chairman for The FDHA from 2006 through 2018, and during his tenure, he incited great collaboration between the Authority, County Commissioners, partner organizations, and citizens of Fulton and DeKalb County.

“The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority would not be who or where we are today without the leadership of Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. who served as the Chairman of our Board of Trustees for 12 years and a member of our Board for 14 years,” said Jevon Gibson, CEO of The Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority.

As The FDHA’s longest-serving Chairman, Dortch oversaw the establishment of $400,000 in scholarships for Morehouse School of Medicine, whose graduates remain committed to providing care to “medically underserved” communities. Dortch also secured the necessary bonds to establish the Grady Advanced Surgical Center among many other contributions to expanding the work of Grady Memorial Hospital, its programs, and its impact.

“Programs and initiatives started under his leadership have allowed The FDHA to expand its mission, remaining a powerful undercurrent of our organization’s work,” said Gibson. “We attribute our passion and our ability to improve the health ecosystem in Fulton and DeKalb to Mr. Dortch’s ongoing commitment to our community.”

Dortch’s son, Thomas W. Dortch III continues his father’s work within the organization as a dedicated member of our Board of Trustees.

The FDHA remembers Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. as a chairman, businessman, servant leader, change agent, public health advocate, and for so many, dear friend.
