September is Suicide Prevention Month. The National Institute on Mental Health reports that in 2017, suicide resulted in 45,000 deaths. Also, in 2017, suicide was the 2nd leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 – 34 and the 4th leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 54. Effective suicide prevention requires multiple approaches. This September, the FDHA wants to empower everyone to help prevent suicide by being there for those in distress. We encourage those seeking help by spreading the word about available crisis services. If you or a loved one needs help with a possible suicide crisis, call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at no cost.
